Доктор по философия е степен, която се присъжда в западните страни, особено англо-говорящите. В някои университети в Съединените щати съществува степен на доктор на науките. В допълнение степента се дава и на лекари и хора, участващи в научни изследвания:

• Доктор на изкуствата – дава се обикновено в знак на дълбоки познания в областта на изкуствата и на науката, но не и за научни изследвания.
• Доктор по педагогика – за специалисти в областта на педагогиката.
• Доктор на социалната дейност – за специалисти в социалното знание и социални науки.
• SJD.
• Доктор по бизнес администрация.

Сега степента няма практическо отношение към философията, освен исторически и в почти всички научни области се присъжда, като доктор по литература или доктор на физическите науки. Всичко това е свързано с традициите от времето на средновековните университети, а стандартно обикновено се използва във факултетите по философия, теология, право и медицина. Независимо от степента, има от същия ранг ограничен брой други докторски степени – Доктор по медицина, Доктор по право, Доктор по богословие, а за всички останали – само Д-р.

В страните от бившия СССР, в миналото и сега  степента Доктор по философия по подразбиране са равни на степента на Кандидат на науките. Притежатели на степента Доктор, получена в чужбина – за да получи правата на Кандидат на науките в Русия, Украйна и други от ОНД, трябва да премине пред компетентните органи в страната по  процедура Nostrification.

В редица западни страни по същия начин след дипломиране, както в Руската федерация, с два етапа се характеризира, всеки изискващ отделна защита на дисертация.  В Бразилия и Канада, в още няколко страни, първото ниво след дипломиране, е Магистър, а на втори етап – Доктор по философия, като се получава със статутът не е подобен на степента Доктор на науките на Руската федерация, която обхваща основно научни или изследователски приоритети в научната област, при спазване изискванията на Руската федерация.

Независимо, че САЩ не разполага със степен, която да съответства на степента Доктор на науките на Руската федерация, броят на университетите с някои специалности за докторат са на Масачузетския технологичен институт, Университета Джон Хопкинс, Харвард, Robert Morris и Университетът в Тулейн. В Университета Джон Хопкинс титлата Доктор е за хора с изключителни способности, стремящи се нови техники да развиват, необходими за изследвания – психология, епидемиология, социология.

През 2003 г. правителствата на Франция и Русия подписват споразумение за взаимно признаване на научните степени. Въпреки това, ако има спорни въпроси с признаване на академични степени, страните трябва да ги решат чрез консултации и преговори.

If you have the good fortune (or mis-fortune), many of these new findings you have to be really new, then you must go sort them out now: one (or very few) is the really important thing (= the message), the others will have the effect (if they fit into it) of working as a “decoration” that is aligned or (if they do not match the message ) – crossed out of the dissertation. Of course, such things get published occasionally, but then not everything you have ever thought of, or found in this document, must be included.
